As a commercial litigator and appellate lawyer, I have encountered many areas of expertise both substantively and procedurally. I have handled over 70 complex commercial arbitrations, and I have found my commercial litigation and appellate background have served me well in those arbitrations.
I started my career in 1977 as a law clerk to the Chief Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court. In 1979 I went to a six person law firm in my hometown of Decatur, Illinois where I had a general practice for three years. I moved to Chicago in 1983 and have practiced in mid-sized firms to a large firm where I am now concentrating in arbitrations, commercial litigation and appeals. I am a partner at Taft Stettinius & Hollister.
I have been involved in a number of cutting-edge legal cases where new laws has been developed. I have handled hundreds of appeals, a number of bench trials, and over 70 arbitrations.
I have attended hundreds of hours of arbitration of continuing legal education and I have been involved in training arbitrators in Chicago for a state trial court arbitration program.
I am licensed in the State of Illinois, Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court.
I have received many recognitions from rating organizations for work in appeals, commercial litigation and dispute resolution. Last year I was honored to receive the John Paul Stevens award from the Chicago Bar Association. The award was presented to me by Justice Stevens.
I currently am an arbitrator on the Complex Commercial Call of the AAA and a Distinguished Neutral for the IICPR. I have served on numerous arbitrations panel and have chaired over thirty panel arbitrations.
I am a past president of the Illinois State Bar Association, the Chicago Bar Association and the Appellate Lawyers Association. I am on the Board of Governors of the American Bar Association and am a past Governor of the Seventh Circuit Bar Association.
Miami University, BA 1973 Southern Illinois University School of Law, JD 1977 Washington University School of Law, LL.M 1979
I have had published over sixty articles on litigation, appeals and arbitrations. I was the co-author of a book on appellate practice.
I enjoy the challenges of serving as an arbitrator. It is intellectually stimulating and satisfying to hear both sides of a dispute and arrive at a proper resolution.
